In the past 25 years, I didn't watch too many Oprah episodes. Really, I didn't. Just a few here and there, usually when she had on some celebrity I liked or the road trip she took with Gayle (that was particularly hilarious). But since her show lasted 25 years and has had such an impact on American culture, I thought I should give it some mention on this blog that is designed to help us remember the years.
I know everyone has an opinion about Oprah, so I suppose I'm no different. I land on the side of appreciating her - but NOT screaming and crying and thinking she's the best thing ever. The daily shows were semi-interesting, and though they were better than Jerry Springer, it wasn't hard for me to live without them. What I find most interesting is how Oprah changed pop culture so dramatically.
And I have to say, for the most part I really do respect how she worked to change it. Yes, she's a little kooky in her theology and yes, she's touchy-feely and quite dramatic. But she really did (does?) push her audience of women to improve their lives, and then get outside themselves and give to others.
I can respect someone who uses their celebrity for the good of others. Celebrities seem to be like all the rest of us and fall into 1 of 3 categories: blatently selfish, apathetic and can't be bothered with anyone, or attempt to think of others. I'm glad that Oprah was in the last category. There are many people who are different (mostly for the better) because they listened to her.
I don't know much about the Oprah network - it sounds like something that will get too big, but what do I know? I truly hope she continues to work for others.
