Let's Play!

What is the normal age that kids grasp winning and losing? I'm a bit afraid that Anna might have inherited my crazy competitive nature, and she is only 4! I don't really know where it came from, but the Everette's really like to win. Well, Michelle and I do. I'm not exactly sure where it came from, since I wouldn't classify either Mom or Dad as super competitive. Maybe from softball? Or Atari / Nintendo? Or swimming? I don't know. All I know is that I like to be on the winning team, even in "friendly" competition like Putt-Putt. (I get crazy just thinking about people who refuse to really play Putt-Putt.)

We've played games with Anna - CandyLand and Chutes and Ladders mostly. However, she got a set of Princess dominoes for Christmas and she is relentless about playing them! Actually, I don't mind it too much. Much better than CandyLand, to be honest. But here's the rub - she is all about WINNING. I am not even stretching this - she is obsessed! She is already able to strategize about how to beat me by playing or not playing certain dominoes. It would be natural to think this comes from me, but I promise that I didn't teach it on purpose! Could she have just inherited this natural bent to try to win? We will have to figure out how to use this instinct for good and not for evil!

An example from Christmas: Wii Fit invades the house, and we all become crazy. By the second day, we've sort of figured out how to play a few games. In fact, I was actually pretty good and by the end of the day I had several high scores. My sister is so crazy competitve that she stayed up until midnight (2 hours past me) until she could beat my high scores. Only then would she go to bed. We are a messed up family. Anna (and Joshua and Liam) have no chance.

And don't worry - I promptly beat Michelle's high scores the next morning.

This reminds me so much of that time you told me you were playing baseball or something with some people. You were supposed to let the guy win but you wouldn't do it. I mean, you say I play like a girl. Why wouldn't you have a competitive daughter? :)
